For our last event of 2017, SCBWI Japan held a morning Creative Exchange in Tokyo, followed by a year-end bonenkai lunch.
In advance of the creative exchange, open both members and nonmembers, participants submitted work that was distributed to all for reading beforehand. At the exchange event, held in a conference room at the Tokyo Women’s Plaza, we critiqued the collection of works shared: picture book manuscripts, author-illustrated picture book dummies, middle-grade fiction manuscripts, and three Japanese-to-English picture book translations. Each submission was allotted ten minutes for energetic feedback discussion, including two minutes for the creator to respond or ask questions. We found that two hours and a half was just barely enough time to complete all of the critiques.
So many strong new works and revised pieces were shared at this exchange, and participants seemed to leave energized, inspired and motivated, and ready to plunge into new projects in the coming new year.
Talk of the past year’s accomplishments and goals for the coming year continued during the lively lunch at SCBWI Japan’s favorite restaurant–Un Café.
We look forward to seeing everyone both virtually, on our listservs, and at our 2018 events. Wishing you a warm year-end and much peace and creativity in the coming new year.
