Japanese Children’s Books 2020: A Curated List, Now Online

Post by Avery Fischer Udagawa

One of SCBWI Japan’s sister organizations, the Japanese Board on Books for Young People, has published its annual Japanese Children’s Books list online. Though previously offered in print, this year’s edition is digital due to cancellation of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair—a key distribution point—and hurdles to mailing internationally.

Japanese Children’s Books 2020

Japanese Children’s Books offers expert recommendations of recent children’s and teen books published in Japan, which may or may not have received wide media coverage. It is a useful resource not only for overseas publishers scouting for titles, but also for Japan-focused and -based writers, illustrators, and translators, who often wish to survey the landscape of Japanese children’s books.

What better time than now to explore Japan through children’s literature? Enjoy this curated list and, if you’re in Japan, consider ordering some titles from your local bookshop.
