Re-Envisioning Revisions is a YA (Young Adult)/MG (Middle Grade) novel revision workshop open only to participants who have pre-submitted complete novel drafts for group feedback prior to the Japan Writers Conference. At the 2020 Japan Writers Conference, participants will meet to discuss whole novel revision strategies and techniques and workshop writers’ revised excerpts.
Why? Writers often get bogged down in whole novel revision and struggle to re-envision their work. This workshop will be led by SCBWI Japan Co-Regional Advisors Mariko Nagai and Holly Thompson who will facilitate creating groups of writers and translators of YA and MG fiction to read and comment on each other’s novel drafts prior to meeting for the YA/MG novel revision workshop sessions at JWC.
The aim is to give YA/MG writers/translators a fixed deadline for completing a novel draft, to ensure that writers are placed in small groups for offering/receiving feedback on drafts in advance of JWC. During the two back-to-back Japan Writers Conference Re-Envisioning Revision sessions on October 10, writers will reflect on feedback, discuss tools and techniques identified for advancing their novel, and plan key strategies for revision. Writers/translators will have a chance to share a brief excerpt of a revised scene, and will set personal goals for completing whole novel revisions within the support structure of a larger writing group.
Participants may participate with the same novel as in the previous revision workshop as long as the work has undergone significant revision since 2019. The end goal is to grow writer revision practices toward developing strong YA/MG novels viable in today’s children’s and teen publishing markets.
July 10: Reserve and request details.
July 30: Full MG/YA novel draft (recommended maximum word count 80,000 words) due.
Aug 10 – Sept. 15: Read group novel drafts and write feedback.
Sept. 15: Feedback to authors due.
Oct. 5: Optional revised excerpt due.
Oct. 10, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.: Meet for the revision workshop at the 2019 Japan Writers Conference with feedback reflections, excerpt to workshop, and strategies for whole novel revision.
